Awkward Embraces

[blip.tv http://blip.tv/play/AYKT02cC]

I was having a great night last night. I had made a good dinner. Had a chance to hang out with Sheri and goof with the silent assassins otherwise known as kittens. I sat down and hammered out my thousand word goal on my novel (with a kitten sleeping in my lap). Then wham! The sky was falling and I felt like I needed a good cry. Kind of ticked me off.

I decided that I was not going to go to bed on such terms and did the only logical thing I could think of. I went to the internet and cruised over to a web series called Awkward Embraces. I needed a laugh and I knew these wonderful women could provide it. This hilarious series stars Jessica Mills, Candis Phlegm and Lyndsey Doolan and follows their rather awkward pursuit of sex…I mean love.

This pursuit is further complicated by Jessica’s complete and total immersion into the world of geek. There is no Star Trek conversation too small for that woman. The eleven episode first season delivers again and again. Even in my suddenly sullen mood I was laughing. I mean how can you top the line, “tiny penises need love too.” I sat there last night and watched all eleven episodes again and felt decidedly better for doing so. It was better than medicine.

I think one of the reasons I love this show is that I got a little lucky in my dating life. Sheri and I met in college and my awesomeness blinded her completely. Before she could get away I had trapped her into an unbreakable marriage contract. What I am trying to say is I didn’t date much but I remember how hard I found it to talk to women about things they cared very little about. I dated one woman who used to call my roleplaying night “that nerdy thing you and your friends do.” I went on a date once where I tried to explain my enthusiasm for Frank Herbert’s Dune and am fairly sure my date went into a coma at the table.

It wasn’t easy being a geek and finding people who were just as geeky as me. Sheri wasn’t a full on geek when I met her but I think she was a geek dying to get out. She watched Star Trek. She read a lot. She was way smart. All the proper ingredients. Our marriage was solidified around a mutual love of the X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Once you find that, you have to be extra careful and not fuck it all to hell.

The series Awkward Embraces does a fantastic job of showing how weird dating is. How difficult it is to find a match. The sacrifices and compromises one makes to find someone to be with. Also, it has penis jokes. This show is frakking funny and I dare you not to watch it and be completely hooked. If you wander over and take a peak do me a favor. Hit the donate button and give them a few dollars so they can get season 2 made. I need to find out what happens next. This is art geeks can support (even if it hits a little close to home).
