Geek Girls Are Beautiful

>karen_gillan_01_1024.jpg

This is probably not the night to be writing this. I have been operating on about 3 hours sleep and am currently loaded on a nice cocktail of Nyquil and Ice Coffee (the battle in my body for alertness or sleepiness is quite entertaining). There seems to be a ridiculous amount of controversy swirling around a parody video by Team Unicorn called ”G33k & G4m3r Girls” (Click here and be magically transported to Action Flick Chick’s website where she has a nice interview up and a link to the video).

The video is of four beautiful women shouting their geek love to the world. The problem started because some people took offense about them being beautiful. Some people took offense over them being sexy in the video. Some people took offense because they apparently are fake geeks or don’t represent geek women or they didn’t like that they used the word girls in the title or that…oh fuck it, you get the picture. People who want to be pissed are going to look for a reason.

I swear I wasn’t going to blog about this because I covered some of the issues about beauty in an earlier blog but then I read Action Flick Chick’s interview and there was a comment after that called the women bitches. At this point I can only assume the Nyquil spiked in my blood stream because my irritability went to warp factor 10.

Why the hell are they bitches because they’re beautiful? Why is it okay to use that word? Why is it okay to judge them? Is there a geek rule book I haven’t seen somewhere which explains the qualifications to enter the wonderful world of geek? Why does anyone care?

This is stupid and pointless. I haven’t wanted to engage in any arguments because frankly most of the arguments sound like they are coming from petulant 6th graders who weren’t allowed to hang out in whatever the hell group they feel they were excluded from. Most of them exhibit no logic, are condescending, and make assumptions which have no actual basis in reality.

Here’s the thing. You want to call yourself a geek, geek out baby. Let your geek flag fly. Who am I to judge? Who is anyone to judge? Ultimately, how does it matter anyway? The world is full of so many wonderful interesting people. They come in all shapes and sizes. At the risk of sounding particularly sappy (I blame the Nyquil and the very cute kitten sitting in my lap) I think that good people are beautiful. Nice people are beautiful. Geeky people are beautiful. I think you understand where I am going with this.

The world is big enough for all of us. Let’s spend a little more time getting to know each other. I for one feel extremely lucky to have met, talked to, and interacted with some crazy, smart, wonderful geeks. I am fairly certain they will not revoke my geek membership card when they find out I am a pretty good basketball player. I love sports. I have been known to read mainstream fiction and hang out with people who do not consider themselves geeks. And for the record using the word bitch to refer to a woman is a sign of ignorance, cowardice, and an inferiority complex which frankly I would seek help for.

  1. >Amen! Your Nyquil fueled rants have made complete sense! Nice to have some support from the XY Chromosome! =)

    >Ditto to what @GirlinRowB said. I wrote a response to the video at PrettyGamer.com, and am happy to report robust discussion in the comments that doesn't veer into ignorant rants.

  3. >Get this man more Nyquil!

    >Warp Factor 10? I hope that is based off the 'TOS' scale. In all seriousness, it is quite possible to be an athletic and beautiful geek. However, judging someone based on their appearance is not becoming of a geek or any classification of a human being, notwithstanding scumbags.

    >I rt'd a blog entry by someone else on this topic the other day..on there, at least, a lot of geek girls professed to be beautiful and geeky, and/or had no problem with other geek girls being beautiful and geeky. Its not one or the other. Ive never understood why women get so down on other women who want to wear makeup or fix their hair, wear sexy (or even nice looking) clothes, etc. it seems that is a common attitude in SF at least. If you don’t want to do it, fine, but let others.

    >I am surprised that this thing seems to have legs and won't go away. I think I might have to start writing the geek rule book.

    >hurray for doctor who!!
