Geeking Out Part 4….

Yes even while dying I will not forsake my duty to bring you the lovely tidbits of geekery glory I am enjoying these last couple of weeks (okay I am not dying, but man it has been a long two weeks. This cold needs to go away).
I love Terry Pratchett. I love him so much that I save his books for times when I am feeling particularly down. I dish them out like fine chocolate because I know at some point I will not be getting any new ones. This lovely book follows Sam Vines and the Watch as they investigate the murder of a rabble rousing dwarf. Funny, touching, and full of real world parallels. Not my favorite Pratchett but wonderful to read as usual.
Jack: Secret Histories by F. Paul Wilson
Repairman Jack is my favorite character in suspense fiction. Like Pratchett I don’t read every new Repairman Jack book when they come out. I save them for times when I am having trouble finding a book to read. I was a little skeptical of this book because it is a young adult novel. Mr. Wilson decided to write a story about a young Jack. Attempting to show us how supernatural forces began to mold him into the man we would later know as Repairman Jack. I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun this book was. I am now reading it to my class. I would recommend reading a few of the adult novels before reading this one.
I have always been a fan of the character of Green Arrow. This does not change the fact some very bad writing has happened with this character over the years. Green Arrow is a character that can sink into mundane silliness if not handled right (this is of course true for any character wearing a costume). Krull has done a lot of wonderful things in setting up the new Green Arrow series and I can’t wait to see where he goes with it. Throw in some great art by Diogenes Neves and my new favorite cover artist Mauro Cascioli (Green Arrow has never looked better than on these covers) and this book is truly geek worthy.
I, Zombie by Chris Roberson and Mike Allred
Her name is Gwen. She digs graves. She is looking for love in all the wrong places. She eats brains. I love, love, love this comic. I am a fan of anything that throws a genre on its head. Gwen is a zombie that has to eat in order to not going all walking dead. This comic is full of vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and romance. Every issue has been a treat to read. Mike Allred’s art fits the story perfectly. Run out and pick up the first few issues. You won’t regret it.
I dislike network sitcoms. It is very rare for me to like anything which the big networks put out. This is exactly why I skipped The Big Bang Theory when it first came out. The thing is I kept having Twitter friends tell me I should check it out. I finally gave in and rented the first season. I was amazed at how much I liked it. Amazon put the next two seasons on sale last week and I snatched them up. My wife and I have been on a long Big Bang Theory marathon. The episode where they taught Sheldon to drive caused me to laugh harder than anything I have seen on network TV in the last ten years. This show is ridiculous. It has been a definite case of better late than never.
