Geeking Out Part 5….
I had no idea it had been over a month since I wrote my last geeking out update. While I know the last few weeks have been tinged with sadness I still have some fine recommendations for a few items which have my geek flag flying.
The Breach by Patrick Lee
Good thrillers are hard to write. They are especially hard to write for me because I am fairly intolerant of too much bullshit and contrived plots. While this book has had a few close calls it has been a very fun ride. Since this is Lee’s first book I can only hope that the next will be as fun.
The Elfish Gene: Dungeons, Dragons and Growing Up Strange by Mark Barrowcliffe
Found this book because it was recommended by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. Mark Barrowcliffe is a young boy in England when he stumbles across the game Dungeons and Dragons. It was a discovery that would change his life. This autobiography is hilarious and truly speaks to my inner geek. It could have easily been called Dungeons and Dragons: A Love Story.
Riposte by Buke And Gass
It is really hard to describe these two musicians. Arone Dyer plays a modified baritone ukulele and has a wonderful voice. Aron Sanchez plays a guitar-bass hybrid. They also modify or make most of their amps and other instruments they dabble with. Their sound is unique and for me hard to stop listening to. Try Medulla Oblongata if you don’t like that song, you are not going to like them.
Showroom of Compassion by Cake
I am not going to lie. They are not doing a lot of new things with this album. If you like Cake, you are going to like this record. Listening to Cake has always been one of my life’s delight. They tend to have playful lyrics with snappy hooks.
The Wire
Ever since I watched the last scene of The Wire’s 5th season I have been chomping at the bit to go back and watch the whole series over from the beginning. I have put it off for a while but last week I went ahead and started it over. It has only reaffirmed to me that it is the greatest crime television show of all time. I would make a strong argument that beginning to end it may be the best television series ever. It has been amazing to watch it over and see how all the story lines interconnected from the first episode. They had a plan and a theme from episode one and they did not waver. No show has ever done a better job of showing institutional failure and corruption. A show full of characters, about characters. How good is it? I guarantee you I will watch it all the way through again sometime in the future.
