Geeking Out Part 7….
Welcome to Geeking out WordPress style. I have to admit my inner geek is loving WordPress. It is so much better than Blogger I can’t begin to imagine why I haven’t switched before now. I will save the iPad 2 for a later geek out since I don’t own it yet. Without further ado here are the things which have made my geeky heart go all a flutter.
The Red Wolf Conspiracy – Robert V. S. Redick
This is one of those rare books which survived a put back on the shelf moment. I have wanted to read it for a long time and the first time I gave it a try I just could not get into it. There was something there though and I was not willing to give up on it quite yet. I am glad I didn’t. It is a swashbuckling fantasy and a grand high sea adventure. It is my kind of fantasy world too. Lots of politics. A touch of magic and multiple points of view. Worth a look if you like George R.R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss.
Shades of Grey – Jasper Fforde
I am a big fan of Jasper Fforde. He writes interesting and witty books. While this is by no means my favorite of his I still enjoyed it a lot. Set in the far future where people are judged by what colors they can perceive this book is one of the more interesting takes on a dystopian society.
The Rural Alberta Advantage – The Departing
After a great first album The Rural Alberta Advantage does something a lot of bands fail to do, capitalize on it. Their second album doesn’t miss a beat. An interesting mix of alternative rock and folk these fine Canadian musicians have been on constant rotation on my iTunes Playlist. Check out the songs Under the Knife and Muscle Relaxants to see if they are for you.
Adele – 21
This must be the week for second albums. While it is certainly not a rule (or anything more than a feeling on my part) I have noticed over the years that strong second albums are somewhat rare. Artists will often put all of their best songs which they have been performing and refining for years on the first album and then be left in a quandary for the second. This week we got two great second albums. I love this woman’s voice. Her music is a little jazzy, a little blues, a little pop, and a whole lot of awesome. Try the songs Rolling In the Deep and Rumour Has It to decide if her music is for you.
Do not ask me why it took my wife and I so long to get to this series. All the qualifications for instant love are there. We are huge fans of Firefly and think Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog is the greatest thing ever produced for the web. As soon as I saw Nathan Fillion was in this I thought, “We should take a peak.” We didn’t though. I don’t know if we were busy trying to take over the world with my evil minions or just sleeping. This series is complete escapism and fantasy. The minute you start asking questions about an author hanging out on police cases the bubble will burst. Watch and enjoy the humor and the great interaction between Fillion and Stana Katic. For an added bonus my fellow geeks tell me the show only gets better as it rolls into its second season.
