Geeking Out Part 9….
It has been longer than expected since my last geeking out recommendation list. I have lots of fun entertainment to share with you this time. Hopefully, you will find something which tickles your bright geek heart.
The Kills – Blood Pressure
I wasn’t sure if The Kills should ever make another album now that Alison Mosshart has joined Jack White’s The Dead Weather. I should have know better. I really love this album and Alison Mosshart has never sung better. The record had a rock blues feel to it. I am glad Jamie Hince and Mosshart have graced us with another fine record. Check out Heart is a Beating Drum and Nail in My Coffin to get a feel for what this album is all about.
Nellie McKay – Home Sweet Mobile Home
I love Nellie McKay. In a lot of ways she is one of the most fascinating artists practicing music today. I mean, seriously, her last album was a Doris Day tribute album. Every new record brings an interesting new musical choice. This time the music has a very island flare. I will warn you though, if you don’t like the ukulele you might want to pass. I love her voice and while this album doesn’t have the biting lyrics of some of her past ones it is still great. She is one of those artists I have somehow missed in concert. I will have to fix this soon. Check out Beneath the Underdog and Dispossessed to get the flavor of this wonderful album.
The Forest of Hands and Feet – Carrie Ryan
I had put off reading this for a long time. It was a young adult novel centered around an end of the world apocalypse. Right up my alley but very close to an idea I had for a story. I finally decided to start it and if it went anywhere near what I was going to do I would stop. It didn’t. It was a wonderful mix of horror, adventure, and love story. I enjoyed this book a bunch and it is currently being fought over by the students of my class.
Are You There Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea – Chelsea Handler
This book is not for anyone who can’t stand cursing, boozing, sex, and heaps of sarcasm. For everyone else prepare to laugh a lot. There were parts of this book I had to stop reading while I waited for my eyes to dry out. Laughed so hard I cried.
Crysis 2
This has turned into one of my favorite video games in a long time. It couldn’t have come at a worse time. With several deadlines bearing down on me I probably shouldn’t be playing too many video games but this one keeps calling me back. Great shooter and unlike some other games seems to actually care that single players will be giving it a go. Nice long storyline with plenty of ways to do destruction.
Flying Wild Alaska
I recorded a couple of episodes of this show on my DVR a long time ago after I saw young Ariel Tweeto on the Craig Ferguson Show. They have been sitting there ever since. Finally got around to watching them this week and loved it. The Tweeto family is a kick. The images of Alaska are gorgeous and Ariel Tweeto is adorable. Will definitely watch the whole series now. I have a feeling this show is going to captivate me as much as The Deadliest Catch.
