Geeking Out With My Towel

I think you ought to know I’m feeling very depressed

This really sums up my week. It seems like nothing is going right and yet I know it is so much worse for others. Sometimes I get mad at myself for falling into the trap of depression. Marvin really has nothing on me. Luckily mother nature took care of me today. After six long torturous hours at work I was out on the playground when the sky suddenly opened up and a torrential rainstorm poured down on my class. My students began to twirl, shout, and dance in the rain. It was at this moment of such pure joy I felt the depression immediately lift from my heart.

It couldn’t have come a moment too soon. I mean seriously, today is national geek day and bring your towel to work day. I mean if there were ever two events more suited for me I am not aware of them. In honor of national geek day I downloaded a boatload of comic books to my iPad. I subscribed to Smithsonian and renewed my subscription to the Skeptical Inquirer. I couldn’t have felt geekier. After I finish this blog I think I might have to go buy some new apps as a finishing touch.

As far as my towel, I try to keep one close by at all times. You never know when the interstellar highway is going to come roaring through. An unprepared tourist is a dead one. I read Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy for the first time somewhere around 1982. To this day I love Douglas Adams. His novels connected with my quirky, geeky side like no other novels I had ever read. For years I would run around quoting the books to my friends (many of whom threatened violent bodily harm if I wouldn’t lay off the android quotes!). About every five years I dust off the books and give them another read through. I even finally got my wife to agree to read them. I miss Douglas Adams, he was taken from us far too early. I am still holding out that maybe he just hitched a ride off this planet earlier than the rest of us.

As far as his amazingly prophetic books, we should be wary. It can’t be too much longer now before the interstellar highway gets here. Just this evening I saw an amazing picture of the planet Wasp-12b. It was on fire and being consumed by its star. This is code for an off ramp was being created. I am telling you people keep your towels close by and your thumb charged. If you are caught unprepared you will never find out what the ultimate question is.

Well I wish you’d just tell me rather than try to engage my enthusiasm.

    >For the love of all that is holy, I missed National Geek Day & Bring Your Towel to Work Day?!?!? & I didn't even know it existed!!! AND it's on my very geeky & wonderful boyfriend's birthday?!?!I feel that I have failed as a geek. Next year, he and I shall have to celebrate in high style! Perhaps I shall have to fashion a towel dress in his honor.

    >Oh, & yes, I'm sure he hitched a ride off planet & is now in that same diner as Elvis (you know which diner, the one in the path of the Perfectly Ordinary Beasts). 🙂

    >Oh I missed national geek day! I actually bring a towel to work everyday in my gym bag, so I guess I had that (yay). Rain started pouring down on you and your students and you all were happy? Well, that's great but it's chilly outside and being poured on would make me even colder, especially having to sit the rest of the day in soaking clothes and getting colder. But maybe that's just me. I'm still not used to the cold weather in the summer, and I hate being wet. Glad you guys liked it!
