Keepers Week 9

Since moving my blog over to WordPress my number of readers has taken a huge hit. I wasn’t really worried about it. I figured it built itself up once it will do it again. Without the same amount of readers I haven’t too many break out blogs yet. This week I published one on my decision to go the independent route with my novels and had my first break out post.

It was interesting to hear from so many different people and it really reaffirmed that I have made the right decision to go ahead and do this. What this means for Keepers, I don’t know yet. I haven’t thought that far ahead. I guess a lot will depend on what the first four books do out there in the giant ebook pond. If they sink like stones I might go back to resubmitting to legacy publishers.

What I do know is Keepers is going to need a fairly major rewrite. Not because I think I am putting garbage on the page but because the farther I get into the book the more I have come up with interesting back story on characters. These plot points will need to be introduced earlier in the novel. I am actually really excited about doing the rewrite on this book because as much as I have enjoyed writing it I know I am going to be able to make it much better.

I am now over the 60,000 word count and should be nearing 70,000 by week’s end. I think I am still on pace for a book which will come in about 90,000 to 100,000 words at the end of the first draft. My plans haven’t changed about putting it aside upon completion. I will immediately start the last book of my Dark Lands trilogy before coming back and doing the Keepers rewrite.

On a totally different front I have finished outlining my timeline for my zombie dad shorts. I finished New Year’s and have begun to work on St. Patrick’s Day. I think I will be done with the shorts around April 10th. I will be editing as I go. Then I will have a few people do an edit and publish the short story collection. I already have the cover in my hands and I can’t wait to show you. It is unbelievably good.

The Shadow Men should be back from the formatter at the beginning of June (although they thought they might be able to get it to me sooner). I decided to hire a professional formatter to get it ready for the Kindle, Nook, and iPad. I think in the future I might take this on. It wasn’t too expensive but it was expensive enough that if the first two books don’t sell well I will do the third book. Truthfully, I don’t want to do it. I want to write. Between the day job and the writing it is hard for me to imagine giving up time for formatting. So I am crossing my fingers I sell enough to pay for the third book (either way I am publishing it. I owe it to anyone who invest the time in my story to see the end).
