NY Times Getting Sexist On Game of Thrones

I wonder if Gina Bellafante woke up  this morning, had some coffee and a lovely breakfast. Then thought to herself, “Self, I think I shall write an enormously sexist review of Game of Thrones and piss off geek girls around the world.” If she did then congratulations on a job well done because they are pissed. Oh, and by the way, you got a little bonus anger in. Non-geeky women are going to be plenty pissed also because you played into every cliché and stereotype known to the world rather than actually write a review.

Bellafante is a television show reviewer for the New York Times. She writes really interesting reviews. (If by interesting you mean she fails to mention the name of one cast member from the show.) Look she hated the show. I don’t care about this. Like most things in life not everyone is going to like the things I love (for the record I don’t know if I love Game of Thrones yet. I haven’t seen it. I loved the book).

What pissed me off (and everyone who I talked to) is that she made several extremely sexists statements. She flat-out says that sex is added to the series so women will watch, “The true perversion, though, is the sense you get that all of this illicitness has been tossed in as a little something for the ladies, out of a justifiable fear, perhaps, that no woman alive would watch otherwise.” That’s right she speaks for all women. Ms. Bellafante is about to find out how little she really knows about the genre and culture she is criticizing.

I imagine the internet will be lit up with blogs and articles today. Really if that was the worse thing she said she might have escaped with a mild thrashing. Not content to just piss off geek girls. She also implies that people who watch Sex and the City can’t do math (interesting this was a show about women and watched mostly by women). She calls Game of Thrones “boy fiction patronizingly turned out to reach the population’s other half.”

The last statement shows you how little she really knows about the readers of this series. I would bet a paycheck that the readership of Game of Thrones has as many women as men (if not more. I know very few men who have read this series but dozens of women).  It is just sloppy, bad writing. I am sure she thought she was being clever but mostly she looks like an ass.

In the future, Ms. Bellafante, when you write about something you clearly know nothing about (in this case women and fantasy) do a little research. Then actually review the show instead of taking a swipe at the genre. If you personally think the genre is sexist than make the point without generalizing. You don’t speak for all women. You speak for yourself.

I am sorry you didn’t like the show. However, you are a professional writer you should know how to choose your words more carefully. You are probably going to get blasted today. Try not to say anything too sexist or condescending. Geek girls fight hard and this is a battle you can’t win. Especially, since you clearly don’t play role-playing games, giving geek girls a clear edge in strategic battle planning. Don’t worry it will all be over soon and you can go back to watching Sex and the City.

Here’s a link to the article in case you missed it.

Well written, well said. Amazing that such ignorant offensive garbage could be put out in a professional review.

Yeah, can’t criticize “A Game of Thrones”. It’s awful drek, but the Thought Police object.
