The Dark Lands Book 2 Week 10

I guess this is the home stretch. I passed the 80% mark on my word goal. I now have a clear idea how all the story lines are going to wrap up. I also know where the final book will start and stop.

I am going to take a short break between writing book two and book three. I will edit book two and start mapping out the book I am going to write after I finish The Dark Lands. Even if the Dark Lands doesn’t sell, a likelihood, I am glad I wrote all three of the books. If I ever get any bites on novels I write down the road, I will be able to point at The Dark Lands to show that I can complete multiple books in a series (in a timely matter).

The other reason is one I have said before. I have learned so much about myself as a writer. It was fantastically wonderful and weird to realize that I was thinking about plots for my next story and know that it was GOING to get written. Not just be thought about for years.

The next book is also going to be a young adult novel. It will be part of a series, which I hadn’t been planning. I am going to try to make it a complete novel. One that has a definite ending but is open for further books. I am not going to write more than one book unless I can sell it. If I don’t sell it I will chalk it up to getting better and write the next one.

Interestingly, the idea I have for it is directly affected by several of my friends. It was talking to them and seeing them that gave me the idea. I don’t want to go into it much more than that because I will of course be blogging about it when I write it.

Book two will be done in September, unless it runs a little long. I plan on starting book three around December and be done with it by Jan-Feb. I think the third book will go the fastest because I have most of the plot threads worked out in my head, I know there will be surprises but I anticipate it going quick. Then it will be editing and onto the next book.

I didn’t send book one out to agents this week but I am going to on Tuesday. I really have two goals with the book. Have an agent take interest, even if they don’t sign me. The second one is of course to be signed. The more I write and work the better I am getting.

Between the blog and the novels I have turned into a writing machine. What a difference a year makes. I wrote two blogs last year (Art is Hard & Meltdown) before I started The Dark Lands. They were about my inability to finish anything. About all my doubts and insecurities. About wishing that I could just rid myself of the desire to write. I reread them last night and smiled because I am not in that place anymore, I am not that man.
