The Dark Lands Book 2 Week 7

It was a fun week of writing. The story has come together in my head and I know exactly where I am going with it for the rest of the book. I have really been playing around with the concepts of good and evil in the series. This week I put part of my story in a blender and stirred it up and let all the black and white settle to the bottom. I am definitely painting my story with shades of grey now.

Being as it is a young adult story (one that I also hope appeals to adults) I have tried to be very careful in how much I challenge the reader into examining what makes someone evil. It ultimately needs to be a fast moving action packed character study. I however think that teenagers are really smart so I didn’t hold back too much.

I have been jotting down ideas for where I am going to go after I finish the trilogy. I have several ideas but I know that the one thing I am going to do is write a stand alone book. This trilogy has been great to get my writing feet back under me. It doesn’t matter if they get rejected because they have taught me so much about who I am going to be as a writer. It taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to.

I will write stand alone books because I want to practice and get better. I want to be able to send out manuscripts to agents and publishers that won’t require an investment of more books before I can move on. I don’t think I am going to be one of those writers who can write a first book and then stop writing the series while I wait to see if anyone will buy it. I want to know how it’s going to end. Maybe someday I will acquire that talent but for now I will move to single books that can be turned into longer series if they sell.

I am closing in on 50,000 words. I will be at 80,000 by the end of September. I am really proud of that fact. It means that I will have written over 160,000 words in 7 months. If I keep close to this schedule I will have produced three complete novels and over 250,000 words in about 10 months. That is pretty good output for someone who is still trying to get my writing legs on firm ground. Can’t wait to see what I am going to do next.

This next week is the start of school but I still plan to devote as much time to writing. I will just have less time for everything else. I also have got to finish the final edit on book one. I have two readers out there waiting to read it now (Yes, I am talking about you Zoë & Merri). Now if I can just get my sleep patterns back into line with someone who has to work during the day all will be well with the world.
