The Dark Lands Week 6

I write this blog from a car traveling up I-5. We had a great trip to Mexico but are definitely looking forward to being home. I did not miss a writing day on the cruise and really enjoyed writing on the balcony overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

I have to admit that when the trip started I had been entertaining the thought of writing more than my 1,000 words a day goal. Didn’t happen. We stayed pretty busy and I really enjoyed the extra reading time. I did make it a point to get my writing done first thing in the morning, just in case I wanted to write more later.

The story is moving along at a pretty good clip. I am about two-thirds of the way to my word goal. At day forty-two I should have 42,000 words and I am at 46,000. I also think that I have the rest of the story mapped out in my head. I know where I want everyone to be at the end. I know how I am going to get most of them there.

I know that my biggest problem in the story so far has been the elapsing of time in the story. This book is going to take place over a very short period of time. My gut tells me that I have done well with showing time moving forward. I am going to have to pay attention on the 2nd draft and make sure that I didn’t screw it up.

This book is now the longest story I have written in my life. I will climb over 50,000 words this week. I am guessing that the story is going to come in at about 75,000 to 80,000. This is only going to leave about 6,0000 words for each main character’s story-line to be wrapped up. Not really that much left in each of their stories. Not quite the home stretch but close.

This week’s preview from the novel:

“Craven I think that perhaps you have things a little backwards here. You should turn yourself into us. If you do this we won’t kill you,” said Curtis.

The larkin threw back it’s head and laughed. “You creatures have the best sense of humor. You never fail to make me giggle.”

Curtis and Havelin pulled out their knives. Craven smiled while cautiously stepping backwards. Curtis could hear the activity of the camp behind him. He hoped that his scouts would make their way up the hill fast.

“I can see by those tiny looking weapons you have there that our conversation is at an end. Shall we play?”

“I think we shall,” said Curtis.

Craven turned and bolted up the mountain. Curtis and Havelin followed.
